Anna Wright is a figurative artist, whose practice focuses primarily on painting from life. This response allows for authentic mark making and depth of colour. My work hovers between close observation and a more gestural approach. I have a particular passion for colour, the physicality of paint and Visible colour layering, which is key to my approach.

I enjoy manipulating ‘stuff,’ working in series and using different making strategies – weaving, knitting, felting, applique, ink drawing i-Pad prints, collage and photomontage. Shape, outline and touch are important. I strive to make objects that surprise, confront, have presence. I like working with found, recycled and donated materials.

These new abstract paintings are considerations of shapes and forms derived from cityscapes. They began to develop their own colour, energy and mood as I worked on each of
them. Some of these paintings are reminiscent of my previous abstract ceramic pieces.

My art is a response to everything I see. The colours come from my Zimbabwean childhood. I draw inspiration from wherever I am – Wood Green, Italy, Greece. I like to convey comedies. My figures are caught in bafflement, my buildings are wonky. I paint on all structures, including buildings and cars.
